We are Spinal Research
There are an estimated 60,000 in the UK living with an injury that shatters dreams, destroys ambitions and rips the very fabric of what was once considered normal. Someone suffers a spinal cord injury every four hours in the UK, causing frustration, grief and a profound sense of loss for both those injured, their family and friends.
It was amidst these very emotions that Spinal Research was established in 1981 by Stewart Yesner, a young man who was injured and was determined to change the future of paralysis. The goal was to fund the science needed to repair and restore the spinal cord, something which at the time seemed like an impossible challenge.
Our vision
We believe in a future where paralysis is no longer a life sentence.
Until recently it was felt that any regeneration and repair of the spinal cord was not possible. However over the last 40 years our research has delivered major advances in our understanding of spinal cord biology, creating the possibility of delivering meaningful therapies and ultimately finding a cure.
For the first time in history, treatments for paralysis are being trialled in humans. Our mission is to harness the power of international science to accelerate the delivery of revolutionary treatments to change the lives of the 60,000 in the UK, and millions around the world living every day with paralysis.
Throughout our history we have played a leadership role in shaping the international research strategy for repairing the spinal cord. This means funding and accelerating the most promising lines of research, as well as fostering collaborations between world-renowned scientific institutions.

Over the last 40 years our work has helped deliver some of the major scientific breakthroughs needed to understand the biology of the spinal cord, and importantly what is needed to repair it. Today there are research facilities around the world developing a range of cutting-edge treatment pathways, some of which are now in clinical trial.
With promising results taking place, the first generation of treatments for paralysis is within our grasp.
The science is here and moving rapidly, what we need now is the support to accelerate this promising research to help our community.
