15 May 2009 is Spinal Injury Awareness Day – a day dedicated to raising awareness of the impact of spinal cord injury on people’s lives.
Did you know that…
Spinal cord injury isn’t just about paralysed arms and legs. It also affects physical sensation, breathing, heartbeat, blood pressure, temperature control, bladder, bowel and sexual function.
An average of 3 people everyday in the UK are involved in an accident that will leave them permanently paralysed and disabled through spinal cord injury
The rate of suicide amongst those with spinal cord injury is 5 times higher than in the general population *
Over 80% of spinal cord injured people are unemployed *
Household income for those who reported being paralyzed due to a spinal cord injury is significantly lower than the national average.**
61% of those who reported being paralyzed due to a spinal cord injury in the US were males, while 39% were females. **
Spinal Research, together with the other UK spinal injury charities - Aspire, Back-Up Trust, Spinal Injuries Association and Spinal Injuries Scotland-
have set up this day to raise awareness of the needs of people whose lives have been touched by spinal cord injury. If you would like to support our research to find a cure, please
