Our Runners

On Sunday 26th September 2004, a number of dedicated runners braved the chill and ran the 13 miles from Newcastle to South Shields on behalf of Spinal Research.

The atmosphere at the race was fantastic, with cheering parties lining the route and an amazing display by the Red Arrows to keep everyone entertained. Despite the cold, the odd injury and a few blisters gained along the way, all our runners completed the course and did us proud!

A huge thank you to all our runners for taking part and raising funds for Spinal Research. Both Pip Gott and Christine Threlfall are seasoned Great North runners, while Sabrina Carter came all the way from Jersey to participate, Pam Tetlow roped in her husband on his birthday, and Suzanne Bell managed to persuade her family and friends to run with her!

Each of our runners had a different reason for doing the Great North Run for us, and Stuart Lowdon, from Hexham in Northumberland, decided to take part because of his friend Lianne Crowe.

In 2001, Lianne sustained C5/6 and T3 spinal injuries after a serious road traffic accident. She is now paralysed in her lower body and partial upper body, leaving her unable to walk or move her hands. Now 25, Lianne remains a positive and vibrant young woman who continues to strive for the things she wants in life.

“She is a total inspiration to me,” says Stuart. “Her refusal to let her paralysis control her life is all the motivation I needed to run for Spinal Research.” Pictured left, Stuart and Lianne with his Great North Run medal.
