On Tuesday 8th May, 16 days after starting the race, Claire completed her challenge of walking the London Marathon in a robotic suit thanks to her own determination, strength and courage. Claire crossed the finishing line at The Mall surrounded by family, friends, celebrities and supporters.
Her story captured the nation’s imagination and Claire’s accomplishment was featured on national TV and newspapers all over the UK. But Claire didn’t just do this for a personal sense of achievement: by doing this incredible challenge, she raised over £200,000 for Spinal Research, which will go towards funding research to find treatments for spinal cord injury.
This April, Claire will take on another fundraising challenge of pedalling 400 miles across England, visiting schools and organisations along the way to inspire others. However, this will be no ordinary challenge as Claire will be relying on her arm strength to cover the distance using a hand cycle.
Claire said: “Over the course of my challenge, I’ll be visiting as many schools as possible so I can talk to the children about the impact my spinal cord injury had on my life, how I have managed to rebuild my life and the 17 day Marathon! I hope to encourage them to believe in themselves and set personal goals to achieve.
“So far my training on the hand bike has been going well. It has been tough in the snow, but I just have to remind myself why I’m doing it and then it’s worth it! Knowing that I’m raising money for research into spinal cord repair motivates me to push myself that little bit further.”
Setting off on Monday 22nd April from Trent University in Nottingham, Claire will pedal her way through Leicestershire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Surrey, finally finishing in London on Monday 13th May.
More details on her exact locations will follow shortly, but if you would like to show your support for Claire and Spinal Research, you can donate via Claire’s Justgiving page.
We would like to thank Claire from the bottom of our heart for all you have done and are doing to raise funds and awareness of our cause.
