Claire Lomas completes her incredible marathon challenge
Spinal Research supporter and Saddle Up ambassador Claire Lomas has completed her challenge of walking the London Marathon walking in a robotic suit on Tuesday 8th May, 16 days after starting the race. Claire was paralysed from the chest down in an eventing accident five years ago but that didn’t stop her achieving her dream of taking part in the Marathon: with the help of the ReWalk robotic suit, but also, and more importantly, thanks to her own determination, strength and courage, Claire crossed the finishing line at The Mall surrounded by family, friends, celebrities and supporters just before 1pm on Tuesday.
Her story has captured the nation’s imagination and Claire’s accomplishment was featured on national TV and newspapers all over the UK. But Claire didn’t just do this for a personal sense of achievement: by doing this incredible challenge, she has raised £110,000 (at 9/05/2012) for Spinal Research. This amazing amount will go towards funding research to find treatments to help those who, like Claire, have been paralysed by a spinal cord injury.
Spinal Research would like to thank Claire from the bottom of our heart for what you did to raise funds and awareness of our cause: the word most used on twitter and your Justgiving page was ‘inspirational’ and we agree!
Thank you also to all the people who walked with Claire, donated, fundraised, tweeted, spread the word, etc… in the past two weeks, you have been brilliant support and we are so thankful – Claire’s walk was such as success also thanks to you all!
